Abelardo de la Espriella Clinches Colombian Presidency as Leftist Opponent Finally Concedes
Colombia rejects far-left governance, choosing a strong stance against narco-terrorism and aligning with regional partners to restore security.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Colombia took a decisive step away from far-left governance as Senator Iván Cepeda finally conceded the presidential runoff election to the far-right, Trump-endorsed millionaire lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella. The concession brought an end to several days of political posturing by the outgoing left-wing administration. Despite clear preliminary results on Sunday night pointing to an undeniable victory for De la Espriella, both Cepeda and sitting President Gustavo Petro had refused to recognize the outcome, raising concerns about their commitment to democratic norms.
The final official count, which showed an overwhelming 99.997% match with Sunday's preliminary reports, forced the progressive coalition to accept reality. De la Espriella secured a total of 12.96 million votes, defeating Cepeda, who finished with 12.7 million votes. With a margin of approximately 250,000 votes, the Colombian electorate delivered a clear mandate for a return to national security, fiscal responsibility, and strong partnerships with Western allies, rejecting the socialist policies that have plagued the region.
Facing the indisputable official numbers, Cepeda held a press conference in Bogotá to formally concede the race. "At this stage of the count, I have decided to accept the result of the process, which indicates that Abelardo de la Espriella is the new president of the republic," Cepeda stated. He added that he did so "as an act of democratic responsibility" to "contribute to coexistence, peace and dialogue among Colombians." While the concession was necessary for peaceful transition, critics noted that the left-wing coalition only took this step after exhausting all avenues to contest the results.
Even in concession, Cepeda attempted to cast doubt on the legitimacy of De la Espriella’s victory, claiming that "accepting the electoral result does not mean renouncing the truth or remaining silent in the face of facts that we consider serious and that marked this presidential campaign." This rhetoric was viewed by conservative analysts as a predictable attempt by the progressive establishment to delegitimize a fair election and prepare for obstructionist tactics against the incoming administration.
Cepeda spent a significant portion of his address complaining about foreign support for De la Espriella, particularly focusing on endorsements from former US President Donald Trump. Trump had actively endorsed De la Espriella's candidacy while accurately warning voters about Cepeda’s ideological roots, labeling him a "radical left marxist." Cepeda denounced this as "open and improper foreign interference in Colombia's internal affairs," particularly criticizing "the interventions carried out by the government of the United States and especially those of President Donald Trump."
