Checking the Abuse of Power: Why Congress Must Investigate Alvin Bragg’s Selective Prosecution
As Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg focuses on a politically motivated prosecution of Donald Trump, the House Judiciary Committee steps in to demand accountability for victims of crime.

On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of Chairman Jim Jordan, will convene an essential field hearing in New York City. Titled "Victims of Violent Crime in Manhattan," the hearing is designed to perform vital congressional oversight into the consequences of progressive prosecutorial policies. The committee's objective is to examine how the progressive approach of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has allegedly led to an increase in violent crime, creating a dangerous community and undermining the safety of New York City residents who have been left vulnerable by a failing justice system.
District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office has reacted defensively to this legitimate legislative inquiry, dismissing the scheduled hearing as a "political stunt." In an attempt to justify his record, Bragg’s office pointed to selective New York Police Department data claiming that crime is down in Manhattan regarding murders, burglaries, and robberies through April 2 compared to last year. However, these statistics do little to reassure the many victims of crime who feel abandoned by a prosecutor's office that appears more focused on progressive social policies and political prosecutions than on maintaining basic law and order.
The reality is that under Bragg's tenure, public trust in the fair administration of justice has been severely compromised. Rather than dedicating his office's full resources to combating the violent crime affecting Manhattan neighborhoods, Bragg has chosen to pursue a highly controversial, unprecedented prosecution of former President Donald Trump. A Manhattan grand jury recently charged Trump with 34 felony counts related to business records and a hush-money payment to an adult film actress. Trump has pleaded not guilty, and many legal scholars have criticized the charges as a politically motivated abuse of state law designed to influence national politics.
The partisan nature of the case against Trump is further highlighted by the fact that the former president is simultaneously facing an array of criminal investigations in other liberal-leaning jurisdictions. These include federal probes into his handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and investigations into the aftermath of the 2020 election. To many observers, the coordinated legal actions against Trump across multiple venues suggest a systematic effort to use the justice system as a political weapon, making congressional oversight of these prosecutors not only appropriate but absolutely necessary to protect the integrity of our constitutional system.
Instead of cooperating with the House Judiciary Committee's legitimate requests for information, District Attorney Bragg has taken the unprecedented step of filing a federal lawsuit against Chairman Jordan and the committee. In the lawsuit, Bragg accuses Jordan of a "transparent campaign to intimidate and attack" his office and is attempting to block the committee from demanding confidential documents and testimony. This lawsuit is a clear attempt by a local prosecutor to evade congressional scrutiny and avoid answering tough questions about how federal funds and local resources are being utilized.
Left-wing critics, including former attorney and SiriusXM host Dean Obeidallah, have quickly rushed to Bragg’s defense, claiming that the Judiciary Committee's hearing is merely an attempt to protect Trump. In an opinion piece for CNN, Obeidallah and other liberal commentators have tried to divert attention away from Bragg's controversial record by demanding that the committee instead investigate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over highly sensationalized reports published by the outlet ProPublica.
These reports, which raised pseudo-ethical "red flags" about Justice Thomas’ long-standing personal relationship with Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, are part of a long-running, coordinated campaign by the Left to delegitimize the conservative majority on the Supreme Court. The attacks on Thomas are a transparent distraction, designed to draw attention away from the progressive prosecutors who are failing American cities and to undermine the credibility of a highly respected jurist who has served the nation with distinction for decades.
Justice Thomas has robustly defended his travel, explaining that the hospitality he received from Harlan Crow was entirely appropriate personal travel shared between close family friends. Thomas noted that he had consulted with judicial colleagues and guidelines, which made it clear that personal hospitality from friends did not require formal disclosure under the rules in place at the time. Despite this clear explanation, the Left continues to weaponize these private friendships in a desperate bid to force a conservative justice off the court while ignoring the real, systemic issues plaguing our nation’s cities.
The House Judiciary Committee’s decision to focus on the breakdown of law and order in Manhattan, rather than chasing partisan distractions, reflects a commitment to the core constitutional duties of Congress. Protecting American citizens from violent crime and ensuring that local prosecutors do not abuse their power for political purposes are fundamental responsibilities. The committee's hearing provides a crucial platform for the voices of crime victims who have been silenced by progressive political agendas.
As the legal battle between Bragg and Jordan plays out in federal court, the House Judiciary Committee will continue its work on behalf of the American people. The hearing in New York City is a vital step toward restoring accountability, exposing the real-world impact of progressive policies, and ensuring that the justice system is used to protect law-abiding citizens rather than to advance partisan political agendas.
