Far-Left Shift: Democratic Socialists Complete Clean Sweep of New York Primaries
Radical progressive challengers backed by self-described socialist Mayor Mamdani oust moderate incumbents, raising concerns for November.

New York City’s political landscape took a dramatic turn to the left on Tuesday as radical candidates backed by the city’s self-described democratic socialist Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, swept the Democratic primary elections. The victories have raised immediate concerns about the growing influence of extreme progressivism within the Democratic Party and its potential impact on national security and economic stability.
In the 10th congressional district, two-term moderate incumbent Representative Dan Goldman was decisively unseated by progressive challenger Brad Lander. Lander, who was heavily backed by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Mayor Mamdani, won the race with 65.7% of the vote to Goldman’s 34.1%. The race centered heavily on foreign policy, with Lander taking a highly controversial stance by accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. Goldman, who defended Israel and was supported by pro-Israel organizations, was unable to withstand the progressive surge.
Goldman, an heir to the Levi Strauss denim fortune, had previously earned praise within his party for leading the first impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump in 2019. However, his support for Israel made him a target for far-left activists in Brooklyn. In a stark example of growing political polarization, a local establishment, Poetica Coffee in Williamsburg, posted on social media that the incumbent congressman was banned from their premises over the weekend prior to the vote.
Following his win, Lander claimed on the social media platform X that his victory represented a desire for "leadership ready to fight, not fold, against authoritarianism." Goldman graciously conceded the race, stating that while it was not the outcome he worked for, he respected the decision of the voters. Former President Donald Trump weighed in on the race, calling Goldman "weak and pathetic" and stating that he "just lost, BIG!"
In another stunning upset, five-term incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat was defeated in the 13th congressional district by Darializa Avila Chevalier. Chevalier, a doctoral student who participated in the highly disruptive pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University, managed to oust Espaillat, a veteran lawmaker and the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Mayor Mamdani celebrated Chevalier’s victory, praising her as a candidate "of clarity, of conscience and of conviction."
Meanwhile, in the 7th district, Assemblywoman Claire Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. Both Valdez and Chevalier ran as democratic socialists endorsed by Mamdani, who is actively working to tilt the Democratic Party toward the far left. Mamdani's platform of democratic socialism focuses on expanding social programs funded by heavy tax hikes on high earners and corporations.
Trump warned of the broader implications of the socialist sweep in a late-night social media post, asserting that America would "never be a communist country!" During the mayoral race, Trump frequently labeled Mamdani a communist, a characterization the mayor has denied, though his economic policies continue to draw criticism from fiscal conservatives.
Establishment Democrats in Washington are reportedly deeply concerned by the primary results. Strategists have issued warnings that nominating far-left candidates who embrace radical foreign policy positions and massive tax increases could alienate moderate swing voters in competitive districts, jeopardizing the party's chances in the upcoming November midterm elections.
