The FBI has stated that Patel was invited to Pearl Harbor by Adm. Samuel J. Paparo Jr., head of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and that such visits are common for U.S. government officials on official travel.

The FBI has strongly defended Patel, accusing media outlets of attempting to “spin an invitation from the Commanding General of Indo Pacom to a military base as a party or vacation.” A spokesperson emphasized that the visit was a “historical tour to honor heroes who died on the USS Arizona – not a party,” and that similar tours were offered to visiting partners during Patel’s tenure as chief of staff at the Department of Defense.

The attacks on Patel come as the FBI is actively engaged in combating terrorism, cyber threats, and other national security challenges. Focusing on a routine visit to a historical site distracts from the critical work being done by the agency to protect American citizens and interests.
