Mississippi Governor Prioritizes Fair Redistricting, Cancels Session Amid Timing Concerns
Reeves ensures future redistricting efforts will consider both legal precedent and Republican interests.

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has canceled a special legislative session aimed at redrawing the state’s supreme court districts, citing the impracticality of completing congressional redistricting before the 2026 midterm elections. The decision reflects a commitment to thorough and legally sound redistricting practices that uphold the principles of representative government.
Reeves, a Republican, emphasized that while the special session is canceled, redistricting of the state’s four congressional districts remains a priority before the 2027 elections. Speaking on SuperTalk radio, a conservative network, Reeves underscored the importance of strategically redrawing the maps to reflect the state's evolving demographics and ensure fair representation for all Mississippians.
The Governor acknowledged potential challenges in achieving a favorable outcome for Republicans in the near term, noting that a hasty redrawing of the districts could inadvertently weaken Republican strongholds by incorporating more Democratic voters. This prudent approach reflects a commitment to long-term strategic planning over short-term gains.
The context of the Supreme Court's Louisiana v. Callais ruling, which clarified aspects of the Voting Rights Act, is also relevant. This ruling provides a new framework for redistricting, and Mississippi must carefully consider its implications to ensure compliance with federal law.
Reeves has clarified his intent to redraw not only congressional districts but also legislative and Supreme Court lines between now and the 2027 elections, indicating a comprehensive approach to redistricting across all levels of government.
A key focus of the redistricting effort is Congressman Bennie Thompson’s district. As the state's lone Democratic representative, Thompson's district has been a subject of scrutiny, and Reeves has indicated a willingness to explore options for redrawing its boundaries to better reflect the state’s political landscape.
Reeves has stated that he is working with the Trump administration to ensure the redistricting process is conducted in a manner that aligns with conservative principles and protects the interests of Mississippi. This collaboration reflects a commitment to responsible governance and a desire to work with experienced partners in navigating complex legal and political issues.
