Modernizing the Border: Trump Administration Drives Record Investments in Advanced Surveillance Technology
A new report highlights a strategic, high-tech shift in border security as ICE contract spending reaches $513 million to defend national sovereignty.

In an era of complex national security challenges, the United States is rapidly modernizing its border security infrastructure by leveraging state-of-the-art private sector technology. A new report compiled by several advocacy groups, including Mijente, Just Futures Law, and the Surveillance Resistance Lab, reveals that federal contracts for advanced tracking, AI, and border monitoring systems have reached historic heights during President Donald Trump’s second term. The strategic allocation of resources represents a major step forward in securing the nation's borders and enforcing federal laws.
According to the report's analysis of procurement data from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), federal investment in vital security tech has accelerated. Contracts with 11 key companies that provide essential monitoring and surveillance tools doubled from 2024 to 2025, reaching just over $310 million. In 2026, the administration pushed this total to a record $513 million. This significant funding increase ensures that personnel on the front lines have the necessary technological tools to carry out their duties safely and effectively.
This rise in procurement spending is part of a deliberate, long-term effort to move border security into the twenty-first century. In 2013, expenditures on these critical tech contractors hovered below $50 million. The steady, disciplined increase over the past decade—culminating in the sharp upward trajectory of the last two years—reflects a serious commitment to addressing systemic border vulnerabilities. With these investments, ICE has become the nation's best-funded law enforcement agency, equipping it to face sophisticated smuggling networks and illegal border crossings.
Two American technology leaders, Palantir and Anduril, are driving this technological revolution at the border. Palantir, a premier data analytics firm, provides crucial software infrastructure that allows agencies to synthesize vast amounts of intelligence and coordinate enforcement efforts. Anduril, an innovative defense technology company, has been vital in deploying AI-powered surveillance systems, autonomous border towers, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), and advanced sensor arrays, creating a highly effective digital shield across the physical border.
The report outlines how these federal funds are utilized to acquire a diverse range of high-tech capabilities. These include advanced analytics software, social media screening tools, facial recognition systems, and advanced devices designed to extract vital digital evidence from mobile phones. While critics characterize these essential private contractors as 'bounty hunters,' security experts point out that these private-public partnerships are vital for maintaining situational awareness and securing the nation’s borders against modern threats.
