Nationals MP Eyes One Nation: A Pragmatic Move for Conservative Unity?
Colin Boyce considers a shift to One Nation amidst concerns over conservative vote fragmentation and the need for a unified front.

ALBURY, Australia – Nationals MP Colin Boyce is evaluating a potential move to One Nation, driven by concerns over the fragmentation of the conservative vote and the need for a unified front against increasingly radical left-wing policies. The Farrer by-election, where One Nation garnered approximately 40% of the primary vote, has served as a catalyst for this consideration.
Boyce, representing the central Queensland seat of Flynn, recognizes the need for conservative parties to consolidate their support base. “The reality of what has happened last night has to be put into perspective: so approximately 40% primary vote in the Farrer byelection [was] for One Nation , so the big question is, what does that look like in central Queensland?” Boyce stated, highlighting the potential for One Nation to siphon off traditional Nationals voters.
He also acknowledged the appeal of One Nation's message in regional areas, noting that “if you’re Pauline Hanson, it’s a lot easier to campaign in Rockhampton than it is in Albury.” This suggests a recognition of One Nation's ability to connect with grassroots voters who feel ignored by mainstream political parties.
While not committing to an immediate departure from the Nationals, Boyce's response to questions about a potential shift to One Nation – “I consider a lot of things” – indicates a willingness to explore all options to ensure the continued strength of conservative voices in parliament. His decision reflects a pragmatic approach to achieving conservative policy goals.
Boyce’s call for introspection within the Nationals – “Absolutely. And I think everybody should be thinking about their political future, particularly the people who are the organisers in the hierarchy. If this isn’t a wake-up call for conservative politics, what is?” – underscores the urgency of addressing the challenges facing the conservative movement. This wake-up call includes unifying behind shared principles.
Boyce’s reference to the 2017 state seat of Callide, where One Nation secured a significant portion of the vote, demonstrates his awareness of the party's potential impact on electoral outcomes. His endorsement by Pauline Hanson in the 2020 state election, which resulted in a substantial increase in his primary vote, further illustrates his willingness to work with One Nation to achieve common objectives.
Boyce, a cattle farmer elected to the federal seat of Flynn in 2022, is a strong advocate for individual liberty and limited government. His previous statements on climate science and energy policy reflect a commitment to free-market principles and responsible resource management. Such principles align with a broader conservative emphasis on economic growth and individual responsibility.
