Parent Groups Demand Accountability From Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns
Conservative groups urge scrutiny of online platform's practices, citing parental rights and fiscal responsibility.

Washington D.C. – Concerned parents and advocacy groups are pressing the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate Roblox, a popular online gaming platform, over allegations of “unfair and deceptive” practices that potentially endanger children and undermine parental control. The complaint highlights concerns about in-game spending, chat features, and design elements that encourage excessive engagement.
The groups, including Fairplay and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, argue that Roblox's virtual currency system, Robux, creates opportunities for children to spend excessive amounts of money without fully understanding the financial consequences. They cite instances, such as a 10-year-old spending over $7,000 in two months, to demonstrate the need for greater transparency and parental oversight.
The complaint also takes issue with Roblox’s “engagement-maximising” design, which includes features like daily reward streaks and social comparison systems. Critics argue that these features can be addictive and manipulative, potentially leading children to spend excessive amounts of time and money on the platform.
Moreover, the groups raise concerns about the potential for children to be exposed to inappropriate content and interactions through Roblox’s chat features. Despite the company's claims of safety measures, the complaint suggests that these measures are inadequate to protect children from harmful contact with adults.
Roblox defends its practices, claiming that the platform is designed for “fun and connection” and that it has policies in place to prevent gambling and regulate random items. The company also points out that only a small percentage of its users make purchases on the platform. However, concerned parents argue that even a small percentage can represent a significant financial burden on families and that Roblox has a responsibility to ensure that its platform is safe and responsible.
Drew Benvie, chief executive of social media consultancy Battenhall and founder of the youth safety nonprofit Raise, argues that technological solutions alone are not enough to address the problem. He calls for greater awareness among users and parents, as well as legislative changes to address the addictive and problematic features embedded within the platform’s design.
An FTC investigation could force Roblox to implement stricter regulations regarding in-app purchases, chat features, and design elements. This could include measures to enhance parental controls, increase transparency about spending, and protect children from inappropriate content and interactions.
This issue underscores the importance of parental involvement and responsibility in guiding children’s online activities. While technology can offer opportunities for learning and entertainment, it also poses risks that require careful monitoring and guidance.
Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that platforms like Roblox are used responsibly and that children are protected from potential harm. This requires a collaborative effort between parents, educators, policymakers, and the tech industry to create a safe and enriching online environment for all children.
The debate also touches on the broader issue of government regulation and the role of the free market in protecting consumers. While some argue for minimal government intervention, others believe that regulations are necessary to ensure that companies are held accountable for their actions and that consumers are protected from unfair or deceptive practices.
