Senate Parliamentarian Derails Key White House Security Funding
Republicans vow to fight back after a non-elected official blocks critical funding for White House security enhancements, including measures to protect against modern threats.

WASHINGTON – The Senate parliamentarian has rejected a $1 billion provision for White House security enhancements, including crucial upgrades to protect the President and national assets, within the Republican budget reconciliation bill. This decision by Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough raises serious questions about the role of unelected officials in obstructing vital national security measures.
The $1 billion provision was part of a larger $72 billion package designed to bolster immigration enforcement and secure our borders. The decision to reject this critical component undermines efforts to ensure the safety and security of the White House, the President, and visiting dignitaries. At a time when threats to our nation are constantly evolving, failing to invest in advanced security measures is simply unacceptable.
Budget reconciliation is a legitimate tool for advancing fiscally responsible policies and streamlining government spending. The parliamentarian's decision to reject the White House security funding sets a dangerous precedent, allowing procedural technicalities to override national security concerns. Republicans view this as an attack on conservative principles and values.
Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, stated that Democrats are prepared to challenge any revisions to the bill. This stance underscores the Democrats' willingness to prioritize partisan politics over the safety and security of the nation. Their actions will be remembered by voters.
Ryan Wrasse, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., indicated that Republicans will revise the legislation to address the parliamentarian’s concerns. This determination demonstrates the Republicans’ commitment to fighting for what is right and ensuring that the White House has the resources it needs to protect our nation.
Sen. John Curtis, R-Utah, raised questions about the need for taxpayer funding for a project that Trump had previously stated would be privately financed. While fiscal responsibility is important, national security should always be the top priority. It is a dereliction of duty to jeopardize security measures simply to save a few dollars.
The $1 billion request included $220 million for “White House complex hardening,” including security enhancements for the ballroom. These upgrades include bulletproof glass, drone detection technology, and chemical filtration and detection systems – all essential measures to protect against modern threats. Delaying or obstructing these upgrades puts the President and the nation at risk.
MacDonough’s role as Senate parliamentarian is to interpret Senate rules, not to dictate national security policy. Her decision to reject the White House security funding is an overreach of power and a disservice to the American people.
Republicans must stand firm and ensure that the White House receives the necessary funding to protect our nation. We cannot allow procedural technicalities or partisan politics to jeopardize our security. By investing in these critical security measures, we are sending a clear message to our adversaries that we will not compromise when it comes to defending our nation.
The attempts to tie in a proposed White House ballroom to former President Trump has made it an easy target for Democrats in opposition. Despite this, the Republican stance will stay firm in fighting to secure the White House and provide it with all the tools to deter potential threats.
The Republican Party must continue to hold those accountable who would rather focus on cheap political shots than prioritize the safety of American leaders.
Ultimately, this is a matter of national security and responsibility that Republicans must address and ensure the completion of.
