Socialist Takeover: Far-Left Radicals Seize Democratic Primaries in New York City Sweep
Backed by socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, three extreme candidates are on track for Congress after defeating establishment Democrats, raising alarms over anti-American and anti-Semitic rhetoric.

The Democratic Party’s internal crisis deepened on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, as a slate of far-left radicals swept New York City’s congressional primaries. Backed by New York City’s socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the candidates successfully ousted moderate and establishment-backed Democrats, including those supported by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The victories secure a clear path to Congress for these extreme figures in heavily blue districts, raising significant concerns about the growing influence of anti-American and socialist ideologies within federal lawmaking bodies.
The primary results have sent shockwaves through the Democratic establishment, exposing a party increasingly controlled by its most radical elements. Candidates backed by Mamdani campaigned on controversial, far-left policy proposals, including the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the implementation of a government-run Medicare-for-all healthcare system. The success of this far-left slate highlights the collapse of mainstream Democratic leadership in urban centers and the rise of a highly ideological, anti-establishment faction.
The most alarming outcome of the primary occurred in the 13th Congressional District, where five-term incumbent progressive Adriano Espaillat was defeated by 32-year-old Darializa Avila Chevalier. Avila Chevalier ran an aggressive campaign from Espaillat’s left, capitalizing on the radicalization of the district's primary electorate. Her victory came despite criticism that she deliberately distanced herself from her Dominican roots in order to appeal to a more radical, non-traditional base within the heavily Dominican district.
Avila Chevalier's background reveals a long history of extreme anti-Western and anti-Israel activism. Born in Florida to Dominican immigrants, she attended Columbia University and is currently a PhD student at the City University of New York (CUNY). During her undergraduate years, her political activity was focused heavily on organizing against conservative groups and challenging Israel's right to exist. She co-founded Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), an organization that has faced widespread condemnation for promoting extremist rhetoric.
Under her leadership and influence, CUAD became a vehicle for virulently anti-American and anti-Western statements. In 2024, the group generated a national firestorm by publicly stating that it was "fighting for the total eradication of Western civilization." Furthermore, the group posted "Death to America" in Farsi on its official X account. While Columbia University eventually distanced itself from the organization due to public pressure, Avila Chevalier's foundational role in the group has raised serious questions about her suitability for federal office.
In addition to her radical campus organizing, Avila Chevalier’s personal social media history features extreme hostility toward American institutions and leadership. Prior to her primary victory, she deleted a series of highly inflammatory posts from her X account. In those posts, she labeled former President Joe Biden a "rapist" and a "war criminal," directed vulgar, profanity-laced attacks at Vice President Kamala Harris, and condemned progressive Senator Bernie Sanders for his "liberal Zionism."
Despite her record of extreme rhetoric, Avila Chevalier received high-profile support from leading socialist figures. On June 18, 2026, she appeared at a Get Out the Vote rally at the King's Theater in Brooklyn, where she campaigned alongside Senator Bernie Sanders and Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The joint appearance underscored the willingness of prominent progressive figures to legitimize candidates associated with anti-American and anti-Western organizations in order to secure electoral victories.
Joining Avila Chevalier in the socialist sweep are Claire Valdez and Brad Lander. Valdez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and a New York State Assemblywoman, and Lander, a former DSA member and progressive activist, both won their primaries handily. Their victories guarantee that New York’s congressional delegation will include representatives who openly advocate for socialist economic policies and the dismantling of federal law enforcement agencies, including ICE.
The success of these far-left candidates signals a dangerous shift in American politics, as individuals with documented histories of anti-American activism are poised to enter the U.S. House of Representatives. As House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other establishment figures lose control of their local primaries to socialist kingmakers like Zohran Mamdani, the national Democratic Party faces a future dominated by extreme ideological factions hostile to traditional American values and national security.
