Speaker Johnson Sounds Alarm on Marxist Infiltration of Congress After Far-Left Sweep in New York
Progressive primary victories over moderate Democrats signal a dangerous ideological shift toward open borders, anti-Israel policy, and extreme economic measures.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., sounded a grave alarm for the nation on Wednesday, warning that Marxist and communist ideologies are actively establishing a foothold within the United States. Following a series of primary elections in New York where three far-left candidates emerged victorious, Johnson urged the American public to wake up to the growing power of the insurgent left. He characterized the incoming slate of candidates as some of the most radical individuals to ever seek congressional office, warning that their positions pose a direct threat to America's foundational principles of liberty and security.
The primary results saw Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Claire Valdez defeat moderate Democratic incumbents or secure open seats. The trio of candidates ran with the active backing of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Because these primaries took place in deep-blue congressional districts, the candidates are virtually guaranteed to win the general election in November, bringing their extreme policy platforms directly into the House of Representatives.
This progressive surge resulted in the political ousting of two prominent Democratic incumbents. Representative Adriano Espaillat, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the first former undocumented immigrant elected to Congress, was defeated by Avila Chevalier. Additionally, Representative Dan Goldman, a Jewish lawmaker who had faced antisemitic attacks over his support for Israel during the race, was defeated by Lander. State Assembly member Claire Valdez also secured an open House seat under the same far-left banner.
These progressive candidates campaign on platforms that stand in direct opposition to traditional American policies. The group is fiercely critical of Israel, advocates for the complete abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and supports the implementation of a national wealth tax. These positions represent a radical departure from mainstream political consensus, threatening national security, fiscal stability, and America's historic alliances abroad.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old activist, has faced significant scrutiny for her extreme political stances. She was an active participant in the pro-Palestinian protest encampments at Columbia University following the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks by Hamas. Deleted social media posts reviewed by media outlets revealed that Avila Chevalier has claimed "Israel doesn't exist," advocated for completely open borders, and written that "all deportation is wrong," raising serious concerns about her commitment to national sovereignty.
Avila Chevalier's positions on law and order have also drawn intense criticism. A supporter of the prison abolition movement, she declined to state whether a person who committed a random murder should face jail time during an interview with the Substack publication, The New York Editorial Board. Furthermore, her past online commentary includes calling former President Joe Biden "a rapist" and using vulgar language to attack former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2021 after Harris warned Guatemalan nationals against entering the U.S. illegally.
In the primary race involving Brad Lander and Representative Dan Goldman, foreign policy was a central battleground. While Goldman faced antisemitic harassment during the campaign due to his defense of Israel, Lander, who is also Jewish, won the nomination by promising to aggressively advocate for the Palestinian cause in Congress. This shift signals a growing anti-Israel sentiment within the emerging faction of the Democratic Party, which could complicate future legislative support for the key U.S. ally.
Speaker Johnson pointed to these primary outcomes as evidence that the Democratic Party has been completely transformed by its most radical elements. "This is not your father's Democrat Party," Johnson warned, highlighting how moderate voices are being systematically pushed out by Marxist-aligned candidates. Johnson has consistently warned of this growing electoral strength since Mayor Zohran Mamdani's upset mayoral victory, arguing that the far-left's rise threatens the core structure of American governance.
The prospect of these far-left candidates entering Congress in November presents a significant challenge to conservative lawmakers. With policies aiming to tax private wealth, dismantle immigration enforcement, and alter U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, the incoming progressive bloc is prepared to wage an ideological battle in Washington. Speaker Johnson’s warnings underscore the need for a unified conservative response to protect traditional American values and maintain national security against an increasingly radical left.
