Poll Shows Americans Questioning Trump's Economic Focus Amid Immigration Debate
Survey data reveals public concern over economic priorities as the administration navigates immigration enforcement and national security concerns.

Washington D.C. – A recent poll indicates that a significant portion of Americans are questioning President Trump's focus on the economy, suggesting a need for the administration to better communicate its strategy on balancing economic growth with national security and immigration enforcement. The Morris Predictive Insights poll reveals that 68% of respondents believe the Trump administration is overly focused on immigration enforcement, including mass deportations, to the detriment of addressing affordability issues.
This sentiment comes amidst rising fuel prices, with the national average standing at $4.55 per gallon, a $1.35 increase from the previous year according to AAA. As Americans prepare for Memorial Day weekend, the increased cost of travel adds to existing economic anxieties. The poll's findings also coincide with President Trump's statement regarding his focus on peace talks with Iran, where he stated that Americans' financial situations were not a primary consideration. This comment has drawn criticism and may have contributed to the perception that the administration is not prioritizing economic concerns.
President Trump is preparing to appoint Kevin Warsh as the new chair of the Federal Reserve, replacing Jerome Powell, who has faced public criticism from the President for his reluctance to lower interest rates. Powell has cited inflationary risks as a primary concern, and the economy is currently experiencing a three-year high inflation rate of 3.8% in April. Warsh's appointment is expected to bring a different approach to monetary policy, potentially aligning more closely with the President's economic objectives.
While the Morris survey suggests widespread concern, a separate Gallup poll reveals that confidence in the economy is at a four-year low. The Gallup poll indicated that 49% of respondents rated the current state of the economy as poor, while 34% rated it as only fair. Just 16% considered economic conditions to be excellent or good, and only a fifth believed conditions were improving. This data suggests a broader economic unease that transcends specific policy debates.
The Morris survey indicates that even among Trump voters, 36% believe his administration's priorities are misplaced. Among voters who no longer support Trump, that figure rises to 70%. Even among loyal Trump voters, 27% believe the president is on the wrong track. This internal division highlights the need for the administration to address concerns within its own base. Securing the border and enforcing immigration laws are critical to national security and economic stability. A porous border can lead to increased crime, drug trafficking, and strain on social services.
