Santos Adjusts Strategy, Prioritizes Beetaloo Basin for Energy Security
Company to focus on approvals for Narrabri gas project while developing larger Beetaloo reserves to bolster domestic energy supply.

Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher has announced a strategic adjustment, prioritizing development of the Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory to secure Australia's energy future, while maintaining focus on obtaining necessary approvals for the Narrabri gas project in New South Wales. This move aims to ensure a reliable and affordable energy supply for Australian homes and businesses.
Speaking to investors, Gallagher emphasized the potential of the Beetaloo Basin to “supply 10m tonnes of LNG and supply the east-coast market for more than 50 years,” highlighting its significance in strengthening Australia's energy independence. This is particularly crucial in an increasingly uncertain global energy market. Securing domestic energy sources reduces reliance on foreign suppliers and insulates the nation from geopolitical instability.
While the Narrabri project will be temporarily deprioritized in terms of capital expenditure and development efforts, Santos remains committed to securing outstanding approvals. This prudent approach allows the company to allocate resources efficiently while ensuring the project is ready for development when market conditions are favorable. Outstanding approvals include a production license, a pipeline license, and development approval for a lateral pipeline.
Critics of the Narrabri project, such as Georgina Woods of Lock the Gate, have voiced concerns about the potential impact on farmland, water resources, and cultural heritage. However, Santos is committed to adhering to strict environmental regulations and working collaboratively with local communities to mitigate any potential impacts. Responsible resource development is essential for balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.
The development of the Narrabri project is crucial for ensuring a stable energy supply for New South Wales. Independent MP Roy Butler's questioning of Premier Chris Minns in the NSW parliament underscores the importance of this project for the region's energy security. Premier Minns has previously expressed support for the Narrabri project, recognizing its potential to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region.
Concerns raised about the size and composition of the Narrabri gasfields, specifically the higher carbon dioxide content, should be addressed through technological innovation and carbon capture and storage solutions. These advancements can minimize the environmental impact of gas extraction while still harnessing this valuable energy resource.
