Trump Backs Sunshine Protection Act: A Victory for Economic Efficiency and American Families
Former President Trump champions permanent daylight saving time, highlighting its potential to reduce costs, boost the economy, and provide families with more daylight hours.

Former President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind the Sunshine Protection Act, a proposal to make daylight saving time permanent, arguing that it represents a common-sense solution that will benefit the American economy and provide families with more time to enjoy the outdoors.
Trump articulated his support in a Truth Social post, underscoring the significant cost savings associated with eliminating the biannual clock changes. He cited the hundreds of millions of dollars spent annually by individuals, cities, and states to adjust clocks, particularly those located in towers that require specialized equipment. "Big Vote today (48-1!) in the Energy and Commerce Committee on a Bill including The Sunshine Protection Act, which will be making Daylight Saving Time Permanent! This is so important in that Hundreds of Millions of Dollars are spent every year by people, Cities, and States, being forced to change their Clocks," Trump wrote.
Representative Vern Buchanan, a Republican from Florida, is leading the charge in the House, emphasizing the bipartisan nature of the proposal. His office noted that the Sunshine Protection Act was included as a provision within an Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute (AINS) to the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act, which was marked up and sent to the House floor by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The legislation boasts 32 bipartisan cosponsors in the House, while a Senate companion bill, S. 29, introduced by Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.), has garnered 18 bipartisan cosponsors.
Proponents of the Sunshine Protection Act argue that it aligns with conservative principles of fiscal responsibility and limited government. By eliminating the need for biannual clock changes, the legislation reduces unnecessary government spending and streamlines economic activity. The additional daylight hours in the evening are also expected to boost retail sales and recreational activities, further stimulating the economy.
Moreover, conservatives argue that permanent daylight saving time promotes family values by providing parents with more time to spend with their children after work. The extra daylight hours can be used for outdoor activities, family dinners, and other quality time that strengthens family bonds.
The proposal also respects the principles of federalism by allowing states that do not currently observe daylight saving time to maintain their existing practices. This ensures that states retain the autonomy to make decisions that best reflect the needs and preferences of their citizens.
Trump has previously voiced his support for eliminating clock changes, stating in an April 2025 Truth Social post, "The House and Senate should push hard for more Daylight at the end of a day. Very popular and, most importantly, no more changing of the clocks, a big inconvenience and, for our government, A VERY COSTLY EVENT!!!"
While some critics raise concerns about potential health impacts, conservatives argue that the benefits of permanent daylight saving time outweigh the risks. They point to studies suggesting that the additional daylight hours can improve mood, reduce crime rates, and promote overall well-being.
In summary, the Sunshine Protection Act represents a common-sense solution that aligns with conservative values of fiscal responsibility, limited government, family values, and federalism. By eliminating the unnecessary burden of biannual clock changes, the legislation promises to boost the economy, strengthen families, and improve the quality of life for all Americans.
The proposed retirement of Representative Buchanan, the champion of the Sunshine Protection Act, may threaten the future of the bill.
The passage of the bill would provide Americans with consistency and peace of mind, while improving their economic outlook at the same time.
