New Orleans Pastor's Conviction Underscores Moral Decay, Need for Strong Families
Terry Reed's crimes serve as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding traditional values and safeguarding children from predators.

GRETNA, La. — The conviction of Terry Reed, 66, a New Orleans pastor, for sexually molesting two teenage boys is a deeply disturbing example of moral decay and the erosion of traditional values within our society. Reed’s actions, adjudicated in the 24th Judicial District Court, underscore the critical need to reinforce strong family structures and protect children from those who would prey upon them.
Reed's abuse of his position of trust and authority is particularly egregious. His manipulation of scripture, as noted by Louisiana state prosecutors, to justify his behavior is a perversion of faith and a betrayal of the sacred responsibilities entrusted to religious leaders. The erosion of moral standards within religious communities cannot be tolerated, and swift justice must be served.
The fact that Reed had previously been convicted for similar offenses in 1997 and 2017, receiving only probation, raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of our legal system in deterring repeat offenders. Such leniency sends the wrong message and fails to adequately protect our children. Stricter sentencing guidelines and rigorous enforcement are necessary to hold predators accountable and prevent future abuse.
This case also highlights the importance of strong family structures and parental involvement in children's lives. One victim moved into Reed’s home at age 16 after experiencing strained relations with his mother. While this does not excuse Reed's actions, it underscores the vulnerability of children from broken homes and the need to support and strengthen families.
The defense's attempt to invoke Louisiana’s age of consent laws is a disingenuous attempt to minimize Reed’s culpability. The true issue is Reed's abuse of power and his exploitation of vulnerable young people. Prosecutor James Wascom’s description of Reed as preying on “very, very troubled boys who don’t have a father figure in their lives” underscores the need to restore traditional family values and provide children with strong male role models.
The upcoming sentencing on June 18 provides an opportunity for the court to send a clear message that such depravity will not be tolerated. A lengthy prison sentence is warranted to protect society and deter others from committing similar crimes. However, true justice requires a broader societal commitment to restoring moral values and safeguarding our children from predators.
